We Serve the
Cahaba River

One of the most biodiverse rivers in North America flows through Alabama. It needs people who will protect it.

How We Protect
the River

We monitor water quality, track pollution and conduct research to better understand the health of the river.

Cahaba River Coalition introduces people of all ages to the science of healthy rivers and the importance of protecting them.

Through citizen science and direct service community members are helping protect the Cahaba River and create real, lasting impact.

We work with municipalities, developers, and community partners to prevent pollution and promote responsible growth in our watershed.

A River Worth Protecting

The Cahaba River is one of the few rivers in Alabama that remains relatively untouched by dams and heavy industry. While many rivers have been altered or degraded, the Cahaba still flows freely for nearly 200 miles, supporting an extraordinary range of plant and animal life, including species found nowhere else on Earth. That kind of biodiversity is rare. It’s not guaranteed.

The river also sustains communities throughout Central Alabama. The Cahaba is a vital source of drinking water, recreation, and access to the outdoors to hundreds of thousands of Alabamians. Protecting the Cahaba means protecting water quality, local economies and a natural legacy that defines our region.

How You Can Help

If you see pollution, erosion or anything threatening the Cahaba River, we encourage you to report it. Every observation helps us act quickly to protect the watershed and the communities that depend on it.
